Hailing from Greece, Parafernelia started back in 2006 as the brainchild of Restis Parafron(guitar and vocals) and Nixxx Roy(guitar). In 2009, they managed to perform in Schoolwave festival, a festival for school bands from Greece. In march 2010, the band finally hit the studio for the recording of their 1st demo including 5 songs. Up to this day, Parafernelia played more than 50 shows all over their country and also appeared several times on Greek TV.
Their self-titled demo begins with an intro lasting for about 27 seconds. In the beginning, the listener can hear voices that drift into some sort of song giving you the impression that someone is playing with the channels of a radio, in the end all the sounds transforming into a ground-breaking motorcycle’s roar.
This is the perfect way to start-off, especially when the first song wears the name ‘Jesus Rides a Harley’. With an up-beat tempo, this is definetly the one track wearing the hit potential the most among the others. The energy is hitting high notes especially at the chorus part where all the band is gathered to shout together.
‘The reason’ continues the ear-party with its fast rhythm, being followed by ‘R’n’r child’ which contains pretty much the same recipe. However, one might find it more appealing if this 3rd song would be more energetic in the chorus area, for a better fit with the whole instrumental experience. Keeping the same observation also for the 4th track, you can however notice how here the rock’n’roll starts to get mixed with a more punk-laced tone. In the end, the last song, ‘Rocking the problem’ fades almost completely into a punkish territory, not forgetting about the sleaze roots.
What is admirable, is the fact that these guys are not afraid to solo, which gives them an awesome instrumental. Speaking of the devil, on the other hand, it would be better if the sound was more polished, but then again we must keep in mind this is a demo and maybe on a first release these details will be fixed.
In the end, the guys managed to pull-off the dirt oozing confidence. Do they bring something new on the r’n’r table, taking into account the new hair-metal wave? Not quite, but they do seem to have a message and with hard work they might get it out there for people to see!
